Stephen K. Parks, President and CEO
Mr. Parks is a seasoned entrepreneur who has started several medical technologies companies. Prior to Targeson, Mr Parks was President and CEO of Rivanna Pharmaceuticals, a small molecule drug discovery company. Mr. Parks was President and CEO of Hemox Therapeutics, a company founded in 1996 to develop a therapeutic process using red blood cells and platelets as carriers of drugs, biologics and other therapeutic substances. He led the successful merger of Hemox with Molecular in the fall of 2002. Prior to Hemox, Mr. Parks founded and served as President and CEO of Medical Innovations Corporation, a manufacturer of specialty enteral feeding catheters. Medical Innovations was sold to Ballard Medical in 1993. Mr. Parks holds a bachelor of science in microbiology from Auburn University.
Brian Campbell, Chief Financial Officer
Dr. Campbell holds an MBA from the University of Western Ontario - Canada and a PhD in Business Administration from Columbia University. He is an well-regarded consultant with 37 years of experience in the economics of air transportation. He has worked with numerous clients in problem diagnosis, specification and analysis of alternative courses of action, development of strategic actions plans, and the implementation of procedures and controls.
Dr. Campbell co-founded two regional airlines, Midway Airlines Inc, and Air Chicago Inc. At Midway, he was the Vice President of Finance and Administration. At Air Chicago he served as Chairman and CEO through the planning and initial capitalization period between 1976 and 1982. Dr. Campbell was directly responsible for raising funds from venture capital firms, negotiating lease and debt financing with lenders, and managing a public stock offering. Dr. Campbell is currently chairman of The Campbell-Hill Aviation Group Inc, a consulting company that provides services to the airline industry in finance, marketing, and operation issues.
Alexander Klibanov, Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Klibanov holds a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Moscow State University, and a PhD in Biochemistry from the Cardiology Research Center in Russia. Dr. Klibanov has extensive experience designing and manufacturing ultrasound contrast agents, and was one of the origional co-inventors of much of the current generation of ultrasound contrast agents. He is author or co-author of more than 60 papers related to the use ultrasound contrast agents as targeted vehicles for imaging and therapeutic indications. Between 1993 and 2001, he worked at Mallinckrodt, Inc as a Senior Research Chemist in charge of the research and manufacture of ultrasound contrast agents. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Cardiovascular Research Center.
Joshua Rychak, Vice President for Research and Development
Dr. Rychak received a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia in 2005, where he developed some of Targeson’s core technology. He has spent the last six years researching the application of biomechanical principles to targeted delivery, and exploring novel strategies of engineering targetable ultrasound contrast agents. Dr. Rychak has worked as a consultant in the pre-clinical ultrasound imaging field, and is an expert in in vitro and in vivo methods of assessing contrast agent adhesion. His research has resulted in the successful integration of engineering principles into the next generation of ultrasound contrast agents.
William McIlwaine (Mac) Thompson, Jr, General Counsel
Mr. Thompson holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and a B.A. from Yale College. He practices corporate law, representing companies in biotechnology, high-tech, publishing, and oil and gas. He has extensive experience on issues associated with financing and refinancing companies including negotiating investment terms and conditions with venture capital firms and investment banks. Mr. Thompson has significant entrepreneurial experience. He is corporate Secretary of Insmed Inc. (NASDAQ:INSM), a pharmaceutical company that develops products for metabolic diseases and endocrine disorders. He also served as Secretary and director of ExploreLearning, an interactive educational software developer, until its recent sale to ProQuest, Inc.(NYSE:PQE). Mr. Thompson is also a member of the boards of several privately-held oil and gas exploration companies based in Texas, and serves on the investment committee of Tall Oaks Capital LP, a venture capital firm in Charlottesville. He is a member of the Board of the Curry School of Education Foundation at the University of Virginia and served as Chairman from 2003 to 2005.
